AWAY FROM HOME

I planted a tree on the day she was born Now I sit in its shade
and hear her car’s horn
I watch her get out and join me on the lawn And I wonder just
where all the time has gone

... As I remember the creature I once held in my lap ... I
remember the baby I watched while she napped ... I remember a
little girl who would smile just for me ... All the while writing a
book I still read …

Where the sun soars ever west And paints her feathers gold
Her room in our nest Will soon become cold
The years have flown by Watching new wings unfold
As she learns to fly Away … from home

This evening I witness a ritual dance When pomp puts her arms
around circumstance
Grown children parade in caps and gowns As she steps to the
stage my thoughts echo with sound

I walk with my daughter this one final time While everyone rises
when the organ starts to chime
Here comes the bride but this one is mine To give away by her
mother and I

... As I remember the very first words that she said ... And I
remember those first tiny steps that she tread ... Now I listen to
these vows full of love and of hope ... And I realize even more lies
ahead …

Where the sun soars ever west And paints her feathers gold
Her room in our nest Will soon become cold
The years have flown by Watching new wings unfold
As she learns to fly Away … from home
Away … from home
