DECEMBER
©1998 Nick Fessler

In December I look out in the distance At the home where I once lived
And remember the best of my days there A film with my own narrative
The scenes show me the months of my life And how quickly they disappeared
I watch the movie and I sometimes cry But the winter-wind freezes my tears
Numbing me to my aches and my fears As I wait for the end of the year

December, And time for me to remember The life that has been mine
December, And time for me to surrender To the passage of time, December …

The flowers of spring have already gone And the leaves of fall have fallen
Winter is brazenly showing its face And is persistently calling
To say that it will soon be the time For me to finally go
Be with my departed friends On the other side of the snow
But now I must walk all alone As I walk through the snow to go home

December, And time for me to remember The life that has been mine
December, And time for me to surrender To the passage of time
The snow is beginning to fall And fill in the footsteps I’ve left behind
December …

In December I look back at the roads I have traveled
In December I recall the splendors and the marvels
In December I follow the footsteps of those before me
And I carry a candle so those behind can see

Before I brave the cold weather outside I put on my hat and my coat
I can now see the sun and the stars in the sky As I listen to the sparkling notes
My breath breaks the silence of the frozen air And I hear my steps in the snow
I can now see the place in my mind’s eye Where I am going to go
But the wind quickly chills me to the bone
It’s December and I am going home

December, And time for me to remember The life that has been mine
December, And time for me to surrender To the passage of time
The snow is beginning to fall And fill in the footsteps I’ve left behind
December, And my life is a map
That will help me find My way home
December and I am going home
